Why Mangroves Matter to Puerto Rico

Importance of Mangroves in Puerto Rico

Mangroves are critical to Puerto Rico’s coastal ecosystems. They provide:

  • Shoreline stabilization: Their dense root systems prevent erosion and buffer storm surges.

  • Habitat: They shelter diverse marine and bird species, many of which are endemic or endangered.

  • Carbon sequestration: Mangroves are effective carbon sinks, helping mitigate climate change.

  • Water quality improvement: They filter pollutants and improve coastal water clarity.

Due to urbanization and hurricanes, Puerto Rico has lost substantial mangrove coverage. Cultivating mangroves in controlled aquaponic systems offers a scalable, resilient way to restore these vital ecosystems.
